Old Aqua Theme

List of known bugs (in alphabetical order):
(Last uptade: 30/10/2002)

Here is a list of the bugs that remains in the release version of the theme. If you have found a new one, please let me know it from the Bug Reporting page.

Adobe Photoshop:

Theme affected: Aqua and Brushed
Problem: The min/max button of the toolbars looks bigger, incomplete and/or displaced.
Explanation: Windows does use of five caption button sizes, and they’re loaded depending of your screen resolution, using some parameters (such as DPI) in order to decide when and where a specific size must be used. Unfortunately, the one used for the small caption buttons is the same used in order to draw the standard caption buttons. So, although is possible to make a small button, it will be launched in the window captions too, which looks worse.
Solution: Any at this moment. As Microsoft did use square buttons in their Luna theme, they was unable to see that this problem comes up when you’re using rounded buttons. The properties used to “reduce” the size of the button in the Luna theme can’t be used here for the shape difference.

Buttons (some):

Theme affected: Aqua and Brushed
Problem: Some buttons shows the text incomplete or the text comes out of the button.
Explanation: It's not a bug in the theme, but a flaw of the Windows architecture. As windows don’t generate the buttons dynamically sized (they have fixed sizes) the use of a bigger font will result in incomplete words when the button is too narrow.
Solution: Any at this moment.

Dialog windows (background):

Theme affected: Brushed
Problem: The background of the dialog windows that do use of tabs (such as Display Properties, Internet Properties, etc.) looks a bit crappy and the texture isn't the same that the used one in the rest of the theme.
Explanation: Seems that Msstyles is unable to handle big images in some parts of the GUI. As you have noticed, the texture for the captions, taskbar, etc. is symmetric, starting darker at the borders and becoming lighter at the center in the same way that the real OS X. In order to get that effect, the texture must be stretched (and when the “Stretch” property is enabled, the image is stretched over both the X and Y axis. Unfortunately, if the same technique is used in the background of some dialogs (such as those with tabs) the theme comes out with no colors settings, and then Msstyles apply the standard Luna colors (light yellow and faint blue). So the only way to texture this part is using the Tiled property and then the texture must be “plain” without shines and shadows.
Solution: Any at this moment.

Explorer windows:

Theme affected: Brushed
Problem: When you're using a left explorer bar (such as Search, Favorites, Folders, etc.) the caption of that left bar looks blurred and with no sharpen lines.
Explanation: This bar uses the same texture that the toolbar item. As the texture must be too big (otherwise the toolbars looks blurred) and again the Stretch property must be used, Windows stretches too much the bmp and the quality of the image is lost.
Solution: I’ve spent several hours trying to find if there is a way to break the linkage between both items, I mean, trying to specify different bitmaps for every item, but I was unable to do it. If that link is hard-coded, I’m afraid that the problem can’t be fixed.

Launch Bars:

Theme affected: Brushed
Problem: The Launch bars looks crappy and blurred.
Explanation: The same bitmap-size problem.
Solution: Aby at this moment.

Places Bar:

Theme affected: Brushed
Problem: The name of the buttons (i.e. My Computer, My Documents, etc.) shows a "ghost" displaced shadow when the name of the button can't fit in a single text line (i.e. My Recent Documents).
Explanation: It’s an annoying issue that I’ve been unable to fix since my first theme. I really can’t explain what’s happening, I’ve checked and re-checked all the properties of those items hundreds of times and anything seems to work. If you’re experienced with Msstyles and you know the source of the problem, I’d really appreciate your advices.
Solution: An easy fix for this have sent to me by Fireball. He has noted that as the problem only appears when there are two text lines, editing the names of the items showns there can fix the problem. He have searched in the registry the key where is stored the name of "My Recent Documents" folder and he have changed it to "Recent". The same can be applied to your hard drives, folders, etc.

Pull down menus:

Theme affected: Brushed
Problem: When a pull down menu is shown over any clear background (such as a white web page) will appear a 2 pixels dark-grey rectangle surrounding the pull down menu.
Explanation: That dark background is part of the image used in the pull down button. If this background is removed, then a thin black line will appear through the button (the border’s item), so I can’t do it transparent, and I can’t do it white or light-grey because then a white or light-grey background will appear surrounding the pull down menu in the standard dialog boxes.
Solution: Any at this moment. However, it’s a minor bug, I think.

Theme affected: Aqua and Brushed
Problem: The pull down button shows a small bottom corner that overlaps the darker edge line of the Address bar in Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer (it’s white in Aqua and grey in the Brushed theme).
Explanation: The source of the problem is exactly the same above, it’s caused by the image background. But there is another responsible: the font size. Since I’m using a bigger font (which looks so cool), the pull down image is drawn over a small part of the edge's toolbar.
Solution: Exactly the same above (I mean, any at this moment).

Taskbar:

Theme affected: Brushed
Problem: The vertical taskbars (those located at the left/right of the screen) doesn’t look fine. They looks with a few bold stripes instead the tight and sharpen lines of the metal texture.
Explanation: It’s another bitmap-size problem. A small bitmap must be stretched to fit all the area of the taskbar, because using a bigger image will crash the theme compilation. I’ve tried to replace this bitmap using Resource Hacker once compiled the theme, but then it becomes corrupted.
Solution: Any at this moment. It’s possible to change the Stretch property to Tiled, and then the bar, when is narrow (no more than 60 px) is rendered properly. The problem comes out when you stretch the bar, then you’ll see a set of vertical black and white lines. I think that in this way the bar looks worse.
