Install Instructions
The installation process is kinda simple, but you must know some
things before to start to use the theme, mainly due to some restrictions
that Microsoft has putted in Windows XP.
Background. If you don’t have installed
any theme besides the standard Luna theme (with their blue, olive
green and silver schemes) and this is the first time you're trying
to install a new one, you won’t be able to do it unless you
prepare your system to handle non-Microsoft themes. As Microsoft
never had the intention to let you to use foreign themes, they have
set a lock in the file Uxtheme.dll which is the file that
manages the themes in windows, and is the responsible for check
whether a theme is digitally signed by Microsoft or not. If so,
the theme can be applied and used with no restrictions, but when
the signature doesn’t exists then the theme can’t be
applied (of course mine isn’t Microsoft digitally-signed).
There is a way to take down this lock, using a tweaked uxtheme.dll
file with no signature-management enabled. The only restriction
for the use of an uxtheme.dll file is the XP version that
you’re using on, and it depends of whether you’re SP1
user or not. I’ve posted both the non-SP1 and SP1 tweaked
files for download, please choose one according your needs:
Download Uxtheme file for
non-SP1 systems
Download UXtheme file
for SP1 updated systems
This file must replace the one located in your System32
folder; if you don’t know how to replace system files, I strongly
recommend you read this
tutorial BEFORE to try change anything in your system.
After replace the file, you must RESTART your system in order to
make the changes to work.
The easy way: StyleXP. It’s an application
developed by TGT Soft that will let you use any theme available
(even non-Microsoft themes) without make any modification to your
system files, plus have some extra features such as theme’s
management, so you won’t need to tweak anything and you can
forgive the uxtheme.dll thing. It’s almost perfect
but it has a big flaw, isn’t free. Anyway, if you want to
give it a try please go to their web page, where a shareware version
is available for download:
http://www.tgtsoft.com
Installing the theme. Ok, you have tweaked properly
your uxtheme.dll file or you have downloaded and installed StyleXP.
What’s the next? Windows uses a specific folder to store and
load all the themes located in your system. That folder is located
here (where X means your XP installation drive):
X:\Windows\Resources\Themes\
What you’ll need to do in order to be able to apply and use
this theme and all their content, is decompress the file Iceman’s
Jaguar 2.0.zip in this folder, paying attention to do it using
the “Use folder names” feature in Winzip or
the files won’t keep their relative location and the theme
won’t work. Once done this, in your Themes folder
you’ll have four new files with the .theme extension
plus a new folder called Iceman's Jaguar.
Now please open your Display Properties window (do right-click
in your desktop and select Properties), in the first tab,
called Themes you’ll see four new options available,
Jaguar Aqua Blue, Jaguar Aqua Graphite, etc. All you must do is
choose the one of your preference and click in the Apply
button, that’s all.
Installing the fonts. As you can see, the theme
looks good but a bit plain. It’s because you’ll need
to install the right font, Lucida Grande. That’s
the font used in the theme, and was ported by Hugo from the original
OS X. In the decompressed folder Iceman's Jaguar (which is located
inside your Themes folder) you’ll find another folder called
Fonts with three Lucida versions: Lucida Grande,
Lucida Grande Bold and Lucida Sans Unicode.
Please install them in your system as is usual, copying them to
your X:\Windows\Fonts\ folder. If you have installed any
previous version of the Lucida Grande font, I strongly recommend
you replace the existent one with this ones I’m providing
you, it’s the best Lucida Grande font even ported. If you
can’t see font changes in your screen, just restart your PC
and you’re done.
Additional Icons. Also in the Iceman's Jaguar
folder you’ll find more icons ported from the original OS
X and a few that I’ve made specifically for this release,
you can use it for customize your system as you wish. |
