The 26-year-old socialite has vowed to change her party-girl image after serving a 23-day jail sentence in June for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

“There are a lot of bad people in L.A. Before, my life was about having fun, going to parties — it was a fantasy,” she tells Newsweek magazine in its Oct. 22 issue, now on newsstands. “But when I had time to reflect, I felt empty inside. I want to leave a mark on the world.”

Hilton says she is now committed to using her celebrity status for the greater good. Next month, she plans to pack her bags for Rwanda to bring attention to the African country.

“I’m scared, yeah. I’ve heard it’s really dangerous,” she says. “I’ve never been on a trip like this before.”

Hilton, accompanied by a children’s charity called Playing for Good, will visit schools and health-care clinics as part of a five-day charity mission. The trip will be filmed — not surprising, given Hilton’s love of the camera.

“I love having everything documented,” says Hilton, who hopes to turn the footage into a film. “It shows people what everyday life is like for me, how hard I work. There are a lot of misconceptions about me.”

Hilton says her dating life isn’t as wild as the tabloids make it out to be.

“I’ve been linked to so many guys, but there’s nothing romantic going on at all,” she says. “I get along better with guys than girls. I trust them more. They don’t get all girly and mean. Girls have drama.”

Paris Hilton was released from a Los Angeles County jail early Thursday because of an unspecified medical problem.

She’ll serve the remainder of her sentence for violating probation in home confinement, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

The 26-year-old hotel heiress was sent home shortly after 2 a.m. wearing an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet, sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Hilton was sentenced to 45 days for violating her probation in a reckless driving case, but had been expected to serve 23 days in jail because of state rules allowing shorter sentences for good behaviour.

The socialite ended up spending three full days at the all-women’s facility in Lynwood, but because she checked in late Sunday and left early Thursday, authorities credited her with five days of time served.

She will be confined to her Hollywood Hills home for 40 days.

“I can’t specifically talk about the medical situation other than to say that yes it played a part in this,” Whitmore said.

Whitmore refused to answer questions from reporters when asked if the condition was physical or psychological.

He did say it was not a staph infection.

The jail provided her with a pamphlet on the skin infection when she checked in. Inmates released the day she entered the facility had said the jail was dirty and infections common.

She returned to her lavish 251-square-metre home in the Hollywood Hills, where authorities say she will be confined for 40 days.

The eight-bedroom, Spanish-style home, built in 1926, sits on a 593-square-metre lot above the Sunset Strip.

Presumably, Hilton will have the run of the grounds as long as she does not step outside the gates.

The conditions of Hilton’s home confinement were not immediately disclosed.

Rumors circulating around Tinseltown say hotel heiress Paris has been giving her new best pal POLE DANCING lessons.

A source said: “Paris took Britney upstairs in her house where she fitted her in a blue tu-tu, and then Paris put on a matching tu-tu.

“They then went downstairs and danced at Paris’s in-house stripper pole.”

Meanwhile, it has also surfaced that rap star PHARRELL WILLIAMS is furious with Britney for snubbing a music meeting with him.

The soon-to-be divorced pop star was supposed to hook up with the NEPTUNES producer yesterday to discuss forthcoming projects.

A Miami source said: “Pharrell takes this as a diss.

“It’s bad. Pharrell even had a basket of gourmet cupcaes sent to the Marlin Recording Studio where they were to work on the album together!”

Britney was also meant to be in Miami last weekend to work with producer SCOTT STORCH, but she cancelled because she said son SEAN PRESTON had an ear infection.
